New Years Eve / Tyler's Birthday

Made it to Rich and Karen's in Iowa in time for Tyler's 1st Birthday --- it was a blast and will post some pictures later today.

Janice and I are going to head back to OKC on New Years Day and spent another night here watching OSU play along with Katie, Adam, Tyler, Rich and Karen. Drive up was pretty incredible --- lots of snow and ice on the trees along with blue skies for a couple of hours made the drive beautiful.

Had some 1/8th mile visibility around Kansas City with "ice/fog" so slow driving there but the roads all in all were good. Temps were running about 8 or 9 degrees once we cleared the Kansas border and rest of the way --- was 19 when we arrived in Des Moines.

Since about 10" on the ground here --- makes me feel like we in Colorado. More later in the day when we have a moment --- going to look at a 50" plasma for Tyler's room since Adam said that's what Tyler wanted for Christmas, didn't get and the grandparents are now going to deal with...

***** Time Passes *****

Hey, it's more than later in the day --- New Year's Eve was great, a little foos ball competitions and just watching a lot of football. Janice/I really really enjoyed the downtime in Iowa and the all the snow. Can't thank Rich and Karen enough for the great hospitality!

Check out Katie's blog for more pictures of Tyler.....

Christmas Time in the City

Been a great week --- Dad/Charlene were up Sunday and Monday so we had a quick get together on Sunday night --- they went back Monday morning early so Charlene could get cooking for their family get together.

Believe it or not, we all made it to Christmas eve church "early" and Christina/Seth/Maddy got to surprise the entire Kraus family as they walked in and saw all of us sitting there -- pretty cool and emotional for GM Kraus as no one knew that Christina/Maddy and Seth were in Oklahoma.

Christmas Eve went great and at 1am, everyone was still at GP/GM Kraus bowling on the Wii that Christina/Seth had bought for their friend Tim back in Virginia -- can't find those everywhere out there at any price.

So, weatherman said "a little dusting of snow" this morning here and you can see what we have in OKC in just the last 30 minutes --- more later on but have a bunch of year-end tax planning to get out to clients so back to the grind.

Sure looks like Christmas outside now and I'm sury Maddy and CJ will be out in the snow after lunch....

Merry Christmas from all of us in Oklahoma..... I

PS -- The pictures from Dad/Charlene are at home on the laptop -- will post them a bit later...

Hawaii Challenge

Just a bit of snow here today and I'm finally starting to be mobile again from my Lasik surgery on Friday. Incredible to be able to see without glasses but anything within 12" of my eyes is a major blur, anticipated that so reading glasses are next on the Christmas list for me.

Still no internet access at the office so this is being written and transmitted from a 56K modem line from home. Ah, the good ole days...NOT.

Wanted to share this "out of order" -- on Tuesday of the Hawaii trip, flew over to Kona Island to see the volcano -- course, it rained! Visibility was les than an 1/8th of a mile most of the day so we continued south to the Black Sand beaches and, on a spur of the moment, all the way to the southern most tip of the United States. Our auto rental agreement banned us from this road but after a quick discussion, our battle cry from Colorado last year of "We don't need no stinking asphalt" echoed in our ears and we headed into uncharted territory and south. We just knew Cliff and Debbie would be proud.

So, enjoy the video --- we really enjoyed the "unknown" factor of not knowing where we were going, roads turning to dirt and then back to one lane wiped out asphalt and then to reach the end of the road with the GPS showing us "in the water", knew we had made it as far south was we could go.

Was just too cool -- very isolated, only a fisherman or two camped out and Kyle even visted a burial site on the point.....

The video, well it speaks for itself.....

More when my eyes recover more and the internet gets faster....

Ice Storm Goeth

Finally, after over 3" of ice and rain, a fairly dry day here but still 30 degrees outside.

Power at the house returned late last night and we just got the office back online about 1 hour ago. AJ and Christy are still without power and OGE says at least 10 days to get everyone back on line.

Course, 4-6" of snow now expected in the city Friday and Saturday as another front targets us.

Will be putting up more Hawaii pictures in the next few days as time permits in the date order they were taken so you may have to go "backwards" a bit in the blog to see the new stuff.

After three days of everything black from no power, sirens constantly in the distance and chainsaws everywhere, beginning to think being stranded on the North Shore wasn't so bad...

From Beach to Ice Storm in Less than 24 Hours

Came back to a major ice storm here in OKC, one of the last planes to arrive before Will Rogers shut down -- 2" of ice on my windshield in long term parking.

Everyone is back home safe and sound -- Dad/Charlene out-ran the 2nd part of the storm as the line was passing through Shawnee -- good thing as a transformer blew in our backyard about 4am this morning so Janice/I are now without power.

More later -- lots of pictures & stories to post on the time we didn't have internet access --- it may be a day or two depending on how long the electric stays on. L&J

Then and Now - Tripler Hospital - Oahu

Dad has told me that one of my doctors practiced at the Tripler Army Hospital back in 1954 while he was stationed in Hawaii and Mom/I were there. This picture is from Dad's slide collection from 1954.

The first picture is from 1954 and the second from last week --- interesting to note are the "cars" shown in each picture.

Also interesting to note is that we could not get to the hospital without going through a security checkpoint down the hill and everyone in the van had to produce indentification before being allowed up the hill to the hospital.

Saturday Morning

It's been a zoo --- no internet in our room or building at the Hilton --- and rain for the past 5 days --- horrible storms over here --- major tree fell on our house on the North South --- could not return to the main part of the island for a day as all roads were closed.

Kerry and crew left late last night and we leave late tonight.

Will get a bunch of pictures on-line as soon as I can get a stable web access --- sitting in Starbucks at the moment and the connection is erratic also.

Dedication was great! And we got "some" of the things done we wanted.

So check back and I'll get as much online later today before we catch the plane tonight --- provided I can find a interest access port.

USS Oklahoma Memorial Dedication

On December 7th, we attended the formal dedication of the USS Oklahoma Memorial on Ford Island. With formal invitations and ID in hand, we were bused to a spot just down from where the USS Missouri is moored. The location of the Missouri is now at the exact location of where the USS Oklahoma was sunk.

The actual dedication was pretty vivid in that the USS Oklahoma was the primary initial target and sunk within 12 minutes of the raid starting. It rolled over 180 degrees almost immediately due to the circumstances of the raid and it's condition -- 429 men were lost.

If you've not heard the story, you need to look up the USS Oklahoma site --- lots of stories by those who survived and were there. This was the second largest loss of life other than the Arizona.

You can see by the location map below the ships alignment just before the attack.

The primary speaker was a survivor who was fantastic. Said he had thought about it being a "monument" but on second thought, when you get your butt kicked and sunk in 12 minutes, it's better suited to be a "memorial". Had a lot of other colorful comments and was obvious that he was honoring his "ship mates" the best he could.

If you think about it, most of those sailors were 19 or 20 years old and now 66 years later, they are in their mid-80's to mid-90's. Amazing to meet some of those survivors and hear their stories first hand.

The numbers of Big Brass from the military was also very impressive.

At the end of the dedication, the Signal Staff from Tinker AFB mingled out of sight among the various individual stanchions in the Memorial itself. The Commander then called out to the Memorial if all 429 were present...and there was a loud number of different voices answering back affirmative. He then praised them for their sacrifices and "relieved them" from duty which resulted in another loud round of applause and shouting, like a bunch of anxious sailors ready to have shore leave --- it was eeary but incredibly moving.

After the dedication, their was a reception at the Pacific Aviation Museum several hundred yards away which added a lot to the history of the attack. Those pictures in another post.

All in all, a very moving and solumn time being on Ford Island within sight of the USS Missouri and the Arizona Memorial imaging what it was like 66 years ago with the attack in progress.

Also, very interesting, in that the story of how the Oklahoma Memorial concept was developed had the design team standing at this site when a US Warship came into port and went by. The sight of all the sailors in dress whites along the sides of the ship was stunning.

It was explained to those present that this was "manning the rails" and a tradition of a ship entering port. And so it was the primary focus in that black/gray granite is flanked by individual white marble stanchions for each soul lost in a permanent "manning of the rails" for the USS Oklahoma.

If you go to http://www.yahoo.com/ and do a search on pictures for the USS Oklahoma Dedication, you can find a slide show of 31 pictures from the event --- the first slide contains a view of the Memorial and flag raising --- Kerry, Jeanne and Kyle are shown on the left side of the picture! AP photo mind you.

Here's a few pictures from the actual dedication ceremony. be sure and "click" on each picture to see a larger view --- lot of stuff going on in these pictures.

Impressive image with the USS Missouri in the background.

Portion of the 300 or so at the dedication -- Dad, Charlene and crew...

One of the USS Oklahoma survivors I had the pleasure of shaking hands with.... He was on deck and thrown into the water from one of the torpedo explosions, swam to the boat on the inside of the mooring and started shooting back...... Just amazing to listen to him.

The final part to this post is the post script of the USS Oklahoma. After the raid, it was impossible to consider rebuilding it but it also posed a threat to naviation because of it's resting place. After two years of work, the ship was "righted" and sold for scrap metal back in the US.

Once made sea-worthy, it was to be towed back to the mainland.

What happened next is the subject of much debate but with no resolution of fact. About 530 miles northeast of Oahu, the USS Oklahoma somehow took on water, broke it's towline and sunk!

To this day, there is no concrete evidence of what happened or why --- but the survivors at the ceremony including the speaker will tell you that the ship decided not leave the waters that contained the souls of 429 of her sailors and itstead joined them for eternity.....

Our Current Location

The house has turned out great! The ability to feed ourselves and spend time with the ocean out the back has just been incredible. There are turtles in the water below us and great people on both sides. The weather has sucked a bit with rain but we've got a lot done so far.

Here's a shot looking back from the seawall --- yep, got an upstairs deck to watch from.

Large open living room just off the kitchen area --- combines living, kitchen and dining room all into one room.

Course this makes for good eating --- grilled burgers one night, steaks the next and tonight we had good old Italian spaghetti....

Another shot of the kitchen area towards the front of the house.

And Janice/my bedroom --- shares a bathroom with Kerry's side but it's a nice bathroom with wildlife.

Got to go grab some sleep --- flying to the Big Island tomorrow morning around 7am and need to be on the road by5:30! Will hit the Volacano tomorrow along with other Big Island areas and then back home lateHave a lot more pictures to post from today but will have to wait ---

Kerry bit the big one at Sandy Beach bay when a large breaker wave slammed him into the beach. Surf levels are crazy at the moment,--- he's ok but spent some time in the hot tub before dinner --- multiple rescues, several people hurt and they say that the waves are running 60-70 feet beyond the breakers.

We've seen it in the 25-30' range so far and it's prety scary

So, more tomorrow or the next day before we move back into Honolulu

Monday Evening Post Tester

Believe we are back on-line -- went over to the ladies from Australia and they allowed me to re-set their cable modem and we were back in business. So this is a test-post to a certain degree to see that the uploads, etc. are truly making it.

One of the old-time surf shops on the North Shore area.

Janice/I at the O'Neil World Surf Championships

Virgil and Charlene trying to stay on the beach out of the surf....

And some general things we've seen today and yesterday.....

Sample of the waves...

Yep....there's a surfer in the middle of that wave.... Click on the picture!

Saturday Afternoon

Had some time before the Big XII game so took a drive up the North Shore towards Sunset Beach, Waimea Bay, Pipeline, etc. Took a few pictures along the way --- think Dad and Charlene are enjoyed the beach the most this afternoon.

The waves are "epic" per the local surf sites so took a few moments at Sunset Beach to catch a few rounds of the O'neil World Championship Surfing competition.

Pretty intense crowd but hard to see the individual surfers as they caught waves --- set down in the crowd and enjoyed the show.

Was pretty amazing how much natural beauty there is to be seen on the beaches and the massive waves -- I mean Dad and Kerry were so intense on the views...

Needless so say Kyle was keeping his eyes glued also....

The conditions were pretty impressive..... The waves just incredible...

Time to go --- lunch is ready and it's time for the OU-Mizzo game -- was an Ohio Buckeyes fan on our plane and he was really PRO on OU -- gee I don't know why......

More later on --- will get some pictures of the house to show you where we're staying.
